3 Reasons Walk-in Bathtubs Should Be Professionally Installed

Some home improvement projects make great DIY projects. Repainting, replacing cabinet hardware, and other renovations that don’t require specialized knowledge can be a fun way to improve your home on your own. Even certain upgrades, like installing a new tub over an existing structure, might be something you can do independently. But if you’re considering upgrading to a walk-in tub, this isn’t something you should turn into a DIY project. Keep reading to learn why walk-in bathtubs should always be installed by a professional.

Removing the Old Tub

A walk-in tub isn’t an insert you can install over your current tub. (There are adapter kits designed to add a door to the side of a standard tub, which you might be able to do on your own, but these are not true walk-in tubs.) This means you’ll need to remove your existing tub to put the new one in, and you want to ensure that the removal doesn’t damage any of the surrounding fixtures, flooring, or wall tiles. And, you’ll need to be especially careful with the drain and faucet fixtures too. Letting a professional do this ensures it’s done correctly, so nothing is damaged.

The New Tub Is Heavy

Walk-in tubs are bulky and heavy. Though they’re designed to fit in the same space as your standard tub, they’re taller, which adds weight and makes them more challenging to handle. But handling the tub and getting it into place is only the start of potential problems for a heavier tub. Because the walk-in tub is taller, it holds more water; and that means that it’s much heavier when it’s filled. This means that you’ll need a professional to double-check that the floor joists are strong enough to bear this added weight. If not, they may need to reinforce your bathroom floor before installation.

Plumbing Is a Pro’s Job

Generally speaking, hooking up a walk-in tub to your existing plumbing is relatively straightforward. Even walk-in bathtubs with shower attachments don’t take much time. However, that doesn’t mean it’s something your average Joe should be doing. Plumbing is one of those areas that should always be handled by a professional. Hooking up a new plumbing fixture might seem simple, but a small error can lead to significant water damage. Simply put, it’s not worth the risk.

Walk-in tubs are an excellent accessibility upgrade for any home. Just make sure that you find a reliable installer to do the job for you rather than do it yourself or ask a family member to handle the job. It’s best to use a professional and ensure it’s done right.
